I make $88k a year video editing for YouTube channels. Here's how you can, too.
Ever wonder what it's like to make a living as a video editor for YouTube channels? I make $88,000 a year doing it and I love it.
I'm sharing my personal journey and insights into how I've turned my passion for video editing into a successful career so you can do the same.
I position myself smartly.
When I first decicing to become a video editor, I asked myself a crucial question: Who do I want to work with?
To find the answer, I experimented with different clients and video styles, from vlogs to gaming videos to talking head videos and more. Through this process, I discovered that my true passion lies in helping people who want to help others. This alignment of values and goals has been instrumental in shaping my career.
Think about who you want to work with, what you want to make and what the result will be. That's how you write your own positoining statement.
I'm fun to work with.
Another key factor in my success is my approachability and fun-loving personality. I make it a point to add my unique style and humor into every project I work on, whether it's adding engaging moments to videos or how I'm fun to talk to via email or video chat. I'm often joking, being thankful and asking people about their lives.
By making the experience enjoyable for my clients, I build strong relationships and garner praise for my work.
But being fun and easy to work with is only part of the equation. I also prioritize fast communication and efficient work practices. I respond to client emails within minutes and deliver high-quality edits fast. That's thanks to my years of experience and streamlined workflow.
This combination of speed and quality has earned me a reputation as a reliable and trustworthy professional.
I surprise and delight.
I'm naturally goofy and it comes out into my work. I'll edit in fun sound effects, funny memes and enhancements that my clients never asked for but absolutely love. Here's some of the things they've said:
Giving extra effort doesn't require much but means a lot to clients.
I'm expensive.
I charge premium rates for my video editing services and it's been like that since the start. I recognize the correlation between price, quality, trust and client expectations. While it may seem counterintuitive, I find that charging higher prices leads to fewer revisions and a smoother editing process, ultimately allowing me to work fewer hours while still delivering exceptional results.
I rarely work more than five hours a day. I can enjoy my life, explore my hobbies and be fully energized to work on videos for my clients when I need to.
Loving what I do leads to success.
I've built a successful video editing business that brings me both financial stability and personal fulfillment. I love what I do, and my clients love the work I produce.
My clients enjoy me so much that they often refer me to friends, family or other business peers.
In the first year I was video editing, I spent a ton of time trying to get leads through cold email, searches and paying for advertising. That doesn't happen any more. Now clients reach out to me. I get at least two emails a month from people saying they heard about me from another client and how they want me to edit their videos! They seek me out and I don't have to spend a lot of time trying to find new clients to work with.
I want to teach you to succeed.
Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of my career is the opportunity to share my knowledge and experiences with others. That's why I'm passionate about creating content and building a community of video editing artists who can learn from each other and thrive in their craft.
