MrBeast Changes His Tune: Is "Overstimulating" Video Editing Done?
MrBeast, the king of over-the-top YouTube content, is changing his game. In a recent tweet, the creator admitted his shift in strategy: "This past year I've slowed down our videos, focused on storytelling, let scenes breathe, yelled less, more personality, longer videos, etc. and our views have skyrocketed. My fellow YouTubers, let's get rid of the ultra-fast-paced overstimulation era of content. It doesn't even work."
Hey Editors, Listen Up
This is a big deal. MrBeast is basically the pioneer of the fast-paced, high-retention editing style that's become so common on YouTube. So, when he says it's time for a change, video editors need to pay attention.
I completely agree. The "overstimulated" approach – cutting every second, throwing in random memes and sound effects – can feel forced. It's like the creator doesn't trust their audience to pay attention unless there's constant distraction.
Personality Matters
One issue I've always had with MrBeast's videos is that, despite his popularity, we don't actually know him. The cuts happen so quickly that we miss out on his true personality. Ironically, we know more about his sidekicks like Carl and Chandler! This is due to his editors constantly cutting around the moments that build character depth.
Of course, MrBeast thrives because of his generosity and the incredible things he does. But wouldn't it be even more engaging if we felt a stronger connection to him as a person?
Invisible Editing is Key
This move by MrBeast feels like a positive step. While there's a time and place for fast-paced excitement, it shouldn't be the default.
The best kind of editing is invisible. It blends seamlessly with the tone of the video and the creator's personality.
As video editors, we shouldn't feel pressured to artificially inflate a video's energy. Respect your audience! They’re smart and care about what you're creating. When you operate with that in mind, your editing will naturally serve the content better.
Your Style, Your Power
Ultimately, it's up to us as editors to shape the future of YouTube editing. Do we want to stick with constant stimulation, or do we want storytelling and personality to shine through? Think carefully while you edit. You have the power to influence how content is consumed!
